Calan Gaeaf (First day of Winter) and ALL SAINTS

Being an accurate rememberence of our All Age All Saints Evening celebration…

Who wants a cuppa?…

so, this is traditionally the first day of Winter… what are the signs of it beginning?

Children Reply, “It’s freezing… it’s darker…it’s misty.”
Some say this was also the, “Celtic New Year” … new year beginning in the dark times…

Children Reply, “No it’s not.”
Can be a scary time, there is Winter Hardship… The Harvest is in but will there be Enough Food for the winter?… Slaughtering livestock… Colds/ Flu/ Pneumonia could be killers…

Small eyes widen… the “grownup” is being weird

But people do what we’re doing now and gather for Fires… Family… Story Telling

Children look hopeful that she’ll be quiet and light the fire…

God, kindle Thou in my heart within
A flame of love to my neighbour,
To my foe, to my friend, to my kindred all,
To the brave, to the knave, to the thrall,
O Son of the loveliest Mary,
From the lowliest thing that liveth,
To the Name that is highest of all.
O Son of the loveliest Mary,
From the lowliest thing that liveth,
To the Name that is highest of all.

Read by one of the children… while the pyromaniacal adult piles up the fire.

So the part about today being ALL SAINTS is that we believe that those we love who have died are with God now… and so we are still connected to them in God, and when we meet together to worship they are with us.

Older child, “we know this,”

So I explain that now we will be sitting around the fire and

Begins telling stories… gradually joined in by older children…

Smaller children get bored of the talking and run around the next room… CRASH… Giggle…

Chatting remembering Parents, Good Friends, Family

Small interlude as pyromaniac adult piles up fire some more and children ask not to be set light to too.

More noise and running around… signs that children are heading from tired to the hyperactivity that is past overtired…

(Bit that needs to be cut so bedtimes can happen:

God has united his people in one communion and fellowship
In the mystical body of his Son Christ our Lord.
Let us pray:
Lord, grant us grace to follow your saints in living to your glory,
That we may receive the joys prepared for those who love you;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Reading from the book of Revelation (21:1-6) )

all die

Sometimes thinking about death is a good reminder for us to live fully too… so a little music to dance to on theme:

Some tapping feet and more exuberent starting their own “dancing”
